Lisa Gade reviews the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Android smartphone. This is the smaller 4.6″ alternative to the 5.2″ Xperia Z3, but it doesn’t skimp on features. The phone has a sharp 1280 x 720 IPS display and it runs on the same 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 quad core with Adreno 330 graphics as flagship Android phones. It has a 20.7MP rear camera, front 2.2MP camera, dual band WiFi 801.11ac, Bluetooth, NFC, and a GPS with GLONASS. We look at model D5803 that has US LTE bands for AT&T and T-Mobile. This is an unlocked GSM phone available from importers in the US. It has a 2600 mAh battery and is water resistent. It competes with the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy Alpha.

  1. This phone is still too big it doesn't deserve to be called compact a compact phone is something like the Xperia P or Galaxy s3 mini or iPhone 5S because they have all 4 inch screens and are the perfect size.

  2. Nice review…. i wanted this phone so bad since it was out but its pointless to get this little fella when i have Z2. I love my Z2 but its size bothers me… i like small but powerful phones and also i am big Sony fan so this compact phone is kinda my dream phone.

  3. Apart from the virtual buttons taking up the bottom part of the screen, there isn't very much else I can think of that Sony can improve upon. This is by far the best phone in the market at the moment, especially if you prefer the compact size without compromising flagship specs. No other manufacturer has thus far challenged Sony in this regard yet.

  4. Its waterproof right? and its gets hot…

what if it's hot and I decided to dip in in some tap water to cool it, would it break? XD just a crazy idea.

Also can you try to draw/scribble on it with a slightly pointed object like a pen or pencil? heard it was possible with z2

  5. This looks like a good phone. No true split screen multitasking but good screen. Too bad and sad that this may be among the last of the Sony phones for the consumers. This is as they look to concentrate on Playstation, Movies and being a manufacturer for camera modules for the competition. The upside may be that the Sony phones might go down in price quicker than the competition.

Thank you for the review Lisa!

  6. I'm getting ready to order this device and I need some info on where I should purchase from? B&B, Ebay or Amazon? I also want the D5803 but I've seen that a lot of users aren't getting the lte display? Why is this?

  7. i've also seen your review of Z3. can you suggest which phone should i get the Z3 or Z3 compact?

    – can you hold the Z3 with just 1 hand?(i saw your Z3 review but u used two hands don't know if you really used 2 hands for review or just can't hold it with one hand
    – is the 4.6 inch display on Z3 Compact good enough for watching Music Video?

i want your personal opinion. i hope you can help me

  8. Thanks for the review! Watched a lot of them before finally ordering my Z3 Compact and I saved yours and one other as a reference because you include so much info. Terrific. I also ordered a Rhino Shield (only avail for front on Z3 right now) after watching an inadvertent drop test (yikes!). Very excited about the phone. I also ordered the SmartBand Talk, so I can finally show my 11-year-old self that the future is cool.
