The Friday Five highlights the biggest tech news of the week: announcements, releases, and anything you can’t miss from the world of digital products.

1. Apple TV pre-orders
In an interview this week, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that the Apple TV will be available for pre-order on Monday of next week. The new Apple TV hardware is the first to run tvOS, a new operating system designed exclusively for the living room and television contexts, and is available for $149 and will ship later in the week.

2. Apple accepts third-party tvOS apps
In related news, Apple has begun accepting third-party applications for the tvOS app store. When the Apple TV launches next week, users will be able to download a whole slew of new custom-built applications that take advantage of the HD television screen real estate. tvOS shares many of the same technologies that make iOS apps so capable and third-party developers have all-new opportunities to make an impact in an entirely new context.
